After reaching the postseason and showing signs of serious progress, the Boston Red Sox appear ready to take another significant step forward as they prepare for the upcoming season. One of the clearest areas of focus for the organization this winter is its starting rotation. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has already made it known that improving the starting staff is a top priority, and he emphasized that any additions made to the pitching roster would need to match the level of quality currently anchored at the top of the rotation.
Last offseason, Boston made a bold move by acquiring left-hander Garrett Crochet, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Crochet quickly established himself as the team’s ace and went on to deliver an elite-level performance throughout the year. His dominance on the mound was no small feat, as he ultimately finished as the runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award. That kind of recognition places him among the very best pitchers in baseball and sets an extremely high bar for any future acquisition the Red Sox may consider.
If Boston intends to bring in another frontline starter, that pitcher would need to be at least as effective—if not more so—than Crochet or the current No. 2 starter, Brayan Bello. This drastically narrows the list of potential targets around Major League Baseball. However, one particularly intriguing name has surfaced in recent weeks: Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
Skubal is coming off a phenomenal season of his own—one in which he was widely considered the best pitcher in the American League. His performance not only exceeded that of Crochet statistically, but it also cemented his status as one of the most dominant arms in the game today. Given his elite command, overpowering stuff, and youth, it’s easy to understand why his name would be connected to multiple trade discussions, including rumors linking him to a possible move to Boston.
Complicating matters, however, is the current state of Skubal’s contract negotiations with the Tigers. According to reports, the two sides remain far apart in talks regarding an extension. This has led to an increase in speculation that Detroit could potentially explore trading him rather than risk losing him in free agency. Skubal is under contract for one more season before he is eligible to hit the open market, making this offseason an extremely pivotal moment for the franchise.

Skubal recently addressed the ongoing rumors during an appearance on the baseball-focused show “Foul Territory.” He acknowledged that in today’s digital age, it is nearly impossible to avoid seeing speculation about one’s own career. With social media constantly circulating trade ideas, fan opinions, and insider speculation, he admitted that he does occasionally see posts and headlines involving his name.
Still, he made it very clear that such chatter has no effect on his mindset or daily routine. According to Skubal, his focus remains exactly where it has always been: on preparing his body, refining his craft, and getting himself ready for the upcoming season. He expressed that, since these trade rumors are entirely beyond his control, there is no reason for him to allow them to dictate his mental approach or professional preparation. In other words, whether he is discussed as a trade piece or not, the work remains the same.
Perhaps even more telling was Skubal’s reaction to the very idea of being traded. He made it known that he has not requested a trade, nor does he desire to leave Detroit. From his perspective, it is puzzling why he’s being inserted into trade conversations at all. His comments seemed to express a level of confusion and mild frustration regarding the constant speculation surrounding his future. While he understands that rumors are simply part of professional sports, it’s clear that he takes pride in being a Tiger and has not actively sought a change of scenery.

That said, the business side of baseball often tells a different story than personal preference. The underlying reason these rumors persist is tied directly to the financial commitment that Skubal stands to command. When he does reach free agency, there is little doubt that he will be in line for one of the most lucrative contracts ever given to a pitcher. Current projections suggest his next deal could approach or even surpass the $400 million mark in total value. That would place him at the very top of the salary scale among pitchers in Major League Baseball.
For a franchise like Detroit, which has generally avoided committing that level of money to a single player in the past, the possibility of such a massive contract creates a difficult dilemma. On one hand, Skubal represents the type of generational talent that teams dream of building around for years. On the other hand, tying up that much money in one arm represents a significant risk and a dramatic departure from the Tigers’ usual financial approach.
Because of this uncertainty, many around the league believe that the Tigers may explore the trade market to gauge Skubal’s value while he is still under team control. Doing so could yield a substantial return in the form of top-tier prospects and young MLB-ready talent. Even if the organization would prefer to keep him, they must weigh the long-term financial consequences against the opportunity to potentially restock the farm system and maintain flexibility.
At the same time, Skubal has also pushed back, to an extent, on the accuracy of the reports surrounding his contract negotiations. During his interview, he expressed skepticism about the figures being circulated and openly questioned where these numbers and claims were originating from. From his perspective, much of the information being presented publicly may be exaggerated, misinterpreted, or entirely speculative. This further emphasizes how little of the conversation is actually in his control—and how unreliable outside reporting can sometimes be.
From the Red Sox point of view, however, Skubal represents an almost perfect fit. Boston has been searching for a true, dominant, postseason-caliber rotation leader to pair with Crochet. Adding Skubal to the mix would instantly give the Red Sox one of the most formidable one-two punches in baseball. The thought of both pitchers taking the mound in a playoff series is enough to excite any fan base, and it would dramatically improve Boston’s chances of making another deep postseason run.
That said, Skubal is far from the only option available. The upcoming market features several established and accomplished starters capable of strengthening the top of a rotation. Pitchers such as Dylan Cease, Ranger Suárez, and Framber Valdez are all set to be available and would immediately upgrade almost any pitching staff in the league. Each of these arms has shown the ability to dominate major league hitters and take on the pressure of big games.

Yet even among that impressive group, Skubal stands in a class of his own due to his combination of age, durability, performance trajectory, and pure dominance. Simply put, if he becomes available, he would represent the most impactful addition Boston could possibly make to its rotation.
Whether or not the Tigers ultimately decide to move him is still unknown. What is clear, however, is that the Red Sox should not allow uncertainty over Skubal’s availability to alter their overall strategy. The team is in a position where it must be aggressive and decisive if it wants to capitalize on its recent progress. Breslow and the front office appear fully aware of that reality and will likely explore every possible opportunity to insert another elite arm into the rotation.
The coming months will determine just how ambitious the Red Sox truly are. If they do manage to land a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber—or someone close to it—it would send a powerful message that Boston is no longer rebuilding, retooling, or experimenting. It would confirm that the organization is fully committed to contending for championships once again.
