The Cincinnati Reds signed veteran first baseman Dominic Smith on Thursday, just ahead of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Smith was immediately placed in the starting lineup, batting seventh as the Reds began a four-game series.

Smith was released by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, after batting .237 with six home runs in 83 games.

The 29-year-old Smith has a .247 career batting average with 64 home runs over eight seasons, having played for the New York Mets (2017-22), Washington Nationals (2023), and Boston Red Sox (2024). He was the Mets’ first-round draft pick in 2013.

In related roster moves, the Reds placed outfielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day injured list due to a right knee sprain and designated right-hander Brooks Kriske, who was with Triple-A Louisville, for assignment.
