The Boston Red Sox have locked down most positions for the long haul, but first base remains a concern. While Triston Casas is technically their current option, his lack of availability has raised questions about whether the team should explore alternatives.

Fansided’s Jake Elman suggests one possibility could be Seattle Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who is set to hit free agency this offseason.

“We’re not stretching here—yes, Suárez has primarily played third base since 2016. But he’s also had limited action at first this year, with appearances for both the Diamondbacks and Mariners. Given he’s now 34, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for Boston to shift him across the diamond, and it’s a scenario worth considering,” Elman explained.

He also noted that Suárez’s underwhelming year with Seattle could make him an affordable short-term pickup.

What just happened? The Mariners traded Eugenio Suarez for nothing!

“The biggest selling point for Boston might be the price. Suárez is batting just .191 with a .699 OPS over 151 plate appearances for the Mariners, well below the .248 average and .897 OPS he posted with Arizona earlier. If he ends up needing a one-year, prove-it contract, the Red Sox would be a smart landing spot,” Elman added.

On the season, however, Suárez is slashing .233/.306/.539 with 45 home runs—already outpacing what Casas has managed over the past two years combined in limited action.

If Boston wants to maximize its chances, even if a title push doesn’t come this year, Suárez could be a key addition for 2026.
