The Cincinnati Reds scratched Nick Lodolo from his scheduled start tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays due to illness. Instead, Scott Barlow will open the game, with the Reds treating it as a bullpen day and pushing Lodolo’s turn in the rotation back.

Manager Terry Francona told reporters before the game that Lodolo was running a fever and dealing with chills. Charlie Goldsmith of Fox19 broke the news just ahead of other beat writers.

Goldsmith also reported roster moves: lefty Reiver Sanmartin is being called up, while Sam Moll is heading to Triple-A. Since Sanmartin wasn’t on the 40-man roster, the Reds designated right-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa for assignment to make room.

Reiver Sanmartin earns the win in his MLB debut

Sanmartin has put together a strong season with Triple-A Louisville, posting a 2.79 ERA across 58 innings. He’s been especially dominant since the All-Star break, allowing only two runs in 21.1 innings (0.84 ERA) with opponents batting just .184 against him.

Over his last four appearances, he’s thrown nine scoreless innings with four hits allowed, no walks, and 10 strikeouts.

For tonight, Cincinnati’s bullpen will be heavily taxed. Fortunately, an off day on Thursday should help provide recovery time, but Wednesday’s series finale could be tricky if several relievers are unavailable, forcing the Reds to rely heavily on their starter.
