Latest Giants-Athletics trade give San Francisco’s lineup all the pop

He has been one of the Athletics’ top hitters over the past three seasons. His breakout came in 2023 when he smashed a career-high 30 home runs and earned his first All-Star selection.

He was even better in 2024, belting 39 home runs, driving in 112 runs, and posting an OPS well above .900. In 2025, his production is expected to fall somewhere between those two campaigns — still making him a very dangerous power hitter.

However, despite signing a five-year contract with Oakland this past offseason — which seemed to put an end to trade speculation — His future with the A’s is now uncertain. The team continues to struggle in 2025 and remains years away from contention. With His value at an all-time high, the A’s, still without a permanent home, may be wise to deal him now.

That brings the San Francisco Giants into the picture. Desperately needing more power to stay competitive in the National League, the Giants currently sit 27th in slugging percentage — far too low to keep pace with the league’s top offenses, including those within their own division.

Athletics beef up farm system while Giants add Rooker’s pop

In this proposed trade, the Giants would land Brent Rooker, while the A’s would receive left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (San Francisco’s No. 2 prospect) and outfielder Dakota Jordan (ranked No. 5), two players with legitimate big-league potential in the coming years.

For a rebuilding Oakland squad filled with young talent, that development timeline could align better than Rooker’s current window. MLB.com notes that Whisenhunt has the potential to become a mid-rotation starter, while Jordan has impressed with his power during his first full pro season in Single-A after being a fourth-round pick last year.

That said, considering the Giants’ farm system isn’t especially deep, other teams might be able to put together more competitive offers.

It’s also unlikely that San Francisco would be willing to part with their lone Top 100 prospect, Bryce Eldridge, even if Oakland tries to push for him. Still, this scenario would give the A’s two solid prospects for their rebuild and provide the Giants with the offensive boost they’ve been missing. So… who says no?
