Breaking News: Phillies make third base upgrade with Japanese slugger

Third base could be a position the Philadelphia Phillies try to upgrade this offseason. Alec Bohm is currently holding down the spot, but given his modest home run production, the team might pursue a more powerful bat at the hot corner.

Naturally, Alex Bregman comes to mind as a potential target — and with good reason. After opting out of his deal with the Boston Red Sox, he’ll be the premier third baseman available and one of the top free agents overall.

However, signing him won’t be easy. Bregman is expected to draw significant interest and will likely seek a lucrative, long-term contract this winter.

What the market for Munetaka Murakami could look like

If the Phillies decide not to pursue Alex Bregman, there are still several intriguing alternatives to consider. One possibility is Bo Bichette, should he be open to switching from shortstop to third base. Another option, according to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, is NPB standout Munetaka Murakami.

Murakami, who stars for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and is expected to be posted this offseason, brings serious power—he’s a consistent 30-homer threat with strong on-base skills.

The downside is his defense, as he’s considered below average at third base. Still, his offensive upside could make up for any shortcomings with the glove. Plus, with prior experience at first base, Murakami could shift there if Bryce Harper moves back to the outfield.
