The San Francisco Giants are aiming for a significant offseason but haven’t had the best start. Pursuing Juan Soto with a massive financial commitment appears unlikely.
Could president of baseball operations Buster Posey consider bolstering his roster while simultaneously weakening the Los Angeles Dodgers by targeting outfielder Teoscar Hernández? The 32-year-old played a key role in the Dodgers’ 2024 championship season.
Hernández, who signed a one-year, $23.5 million deal, posted an impressive .272/.339/.501 slash line with 33 home runs, 99 RBIs, and 84 runs in 652 plate appearances. During the postseason, he contributed a .250/.352/.417 line with three homers, 12 RBIs, and eight runs scored.

His standout season earned him a second career All-Star selection in July and a third Silver Slugger Award. Now a free agent, Hernández has expressed interest in staying with the Dodgers, who reportedly share the sentiment. However, the unpredictability of free agency leaves the door open.
FanSided’s Chris Landers suggested that signing Hernández could be a viable backup plan for the Giants if acquiring Soto proves unattainable.
“Hernández provides middle-of-the-lineup power without the long-term financial commitment that could strain San Francisco’s budget,” Landers noted. “If the Giants are willing to outbid other teams, especially with the Yankees and Dodgers focused on Soto, Posey might pull off the deal and significantly boost his offense.”
Spotrac estimates Hernández’s market value at three years and $71 million, while MLB Trade Rumors projects a slightly lower three-year, $60 million contract.
