As much as upgrading the infield was the Seattle Mariners’ primary focus during the offseason, they also needed to strengthen their bullpen. However, one potential experienced addition for the bullpen is now off the table.

As confirmed by MLB.com Detroit Tigers reporter Jason Beck, He has signed a minor league deal for his third stint with the organization, which includes a non-roster invite to Major League camp.

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press later reported the financial details of the contract, with Chafin set to earn $2.5 million if he makes the roster, along with an additional $1.5 million in incentives and a $250K assignment bonus.

Mariners really could have used Andrew Chafin in their bullpen

The financial terms of Andrew Chafin’s deal make it puzzling why the Seattle Mariners didn’t pursue him, especially considering the apparent budget constraints placed on Jerry Dipoto and the front office by ownership. At a relatively affordable price, Chafin, with his long-term history of solid performance in the Majors, could have been a valuable addition to the Mariners’ bullpen.

A Perspective of Andrew Chafin - AZ Snake Pit

Last season, Chafin posted a strong 3.16 ERA, 2.54 FIP, and a 30.9% strikeout rate in 37 innings (41 appearances) during his second stint with the Detroit Tigers.

While his performance dipped after being traded to the Texas Rangers at the deadline, it’s likely he’ll bounce back with the Tigers, an organization where he had success during his first stint in 2022.

The 34-year-old left-hander, who was drafted in the first round in 2011, primarily relies on his slider and sinker, with a four-seam fastball as his third pitch.

Given the pitcher-friendly environment of T-Mobile Park, it’s easy to imagine Chafin thriving there. Over his 11 years in the Majors, Chafin has thrown 508 1/3 innings in 601 appearances, posting a 3.42 ERA, 3.29 FIP, 1.275 WHIP, and a 25.9% strikeout rate.

As a whole, the Mariners’ bullpen performed well last season, ranking ninth in the Majors in ERA, fourth in WHIP, and second in both fewest walks and opposing batting average. However, the bullpen began to wear down as the season progressed.

Despite Matt Brash returning after a year out and Gregory Santos expected to be healthier, both come with uncertainties. Adding Chafin could have provided the Mariners with an experienced, dependable left-handed option, giving the bullpen a much-needed boost.
