Sean Manaea developed a strong bond with the Mets, so much so that he described the 2024 season as the “best one of my career” during his final press conference after the team’s elimination by the Dodgers in Game 6 of the ALCS.

Following Luis Severino’s departure to the A’s on a three-year, $67 million deal, WFAN host Evan Roberts called on the Mets to prioritize retaining Manaea.

“I think part of that is emotional,” Roberts admitted via Audacy. “He became our ace last year. … I think we formed a connection with him. I know there’s risk involved… but Sean Manaea would be the guy I am willing to pay big money and big years to.”

Manaea, like Severino, turned down the Mets’ $21.05 million qualifying offer. Severino’s decision paid off with a contract averaging $23.33 million annually, suggesting Manaea could command an even larger deal. A four-year contract for Manaea could potentially surpass $90 million in total value.

After adjusting his arm slot in August, Manaea emerged as the Mets’ ace, compiling a 2.63 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts over his final 11 starts. In the postseason, he posted a 2-1 record with a 4.74 ERA across 19 innings.

Reflecting on the year, Manaea shared in October, “I’m super proud of the work I’ve been able to put in with everyone here, on and off the field. And I’m just super proud of the year as a whole.”
