While the Mets haven’t made any major moves since signing Juan Soto on Sunday night, there have been several noteworthy developments involving the team at the Winter Meetings today.

Firstly, a report from Sports Illustrated revealed that the Mets are open to trading outfielder Starling Marte in exchange for relief pitching. Marte, who will turn 36 next season and is entering the final year of his contract, struggled with injuries and declining defensive skills in 2024.

He posted a .269/.327/.388 slash line with an OPS+ of 104. With Soto expected to take over right field, Marte would likely serve as the primary designated hitter if he stays on the roster. However, placing him on the trade block could signal the Mets’ intent to upgrade the DH position this offseason or potentially shift Mark Vientos into that role while acquiring new players at first and third base.

In addition, reports suggest the Mets have been in contact with Nick Pivetta, a pitcher they were linked to over the weekend. Pivetta, who declined a qualifying offer from the Red Sox earlier this offseason, would cost the Mets a draft pick if signed.

Although he’s been inconsistent, Pivetta brings experience as both a starter and reliever. Since joining Boston, his performance has improved (ERA+ of 103 with the Red Sox compared to 78 with the Phillies), but he’s not considered a top-tier rotation option. Instead, he represents the type of value-driven acquisition David Stearns is known for, aiming to unlock potential through adjustments or tweaks.

Finally, the Mets were reportedly in trade discussions to acquire top-tier starter Garrett Crochet. However, Crochet now appears to be heading to the Red Sox in a deal centered around catcher Kyle Teel and other prospects being sent to the White Sox.
