The Boston Red Sox have been active this offseason, tackling their pitching issues by acquiring Garrett Crochet via trade and signing Walker Buehler. Following a disappointing 2024 campaign, they’re positioning themselves to contend for the AL East title in 2025.
Nolan Arenado listed as best fit for Red Sox
The team still requires offensive improvements, especially in the infield. According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, Cardinals’ third baseman and 10-time Gold Glove winner Nolan Arenado is seen as the ideal addition for the Red Sox.

“While the New York Yankees reportedly tried to structure a trade around Marcus Stroman, the Cardinals rejected it. Then, the Houston Astros made an attempt for Arenado, but he declined due to his no-trade clause. It’s important to note that neither team is among the six that Arenado is willing to play for. Despite rumors of his preference for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Sox are the team that stands out,” Rymer wrote.
Arenado could help improve Boston’s offense and defense
Rafael Devers is currently the Boston Red Sox’s third baseman, but his defense at the position has been subpar. The team would prefer to move him to first base and secure a defensive upgrade at third, with Nolan Arenado being a potential solution.

Arenado could also contribute more offense, although his production has declined. Last season, he hit only 16 home runs with the St. Louis Cardinals and posted a 102 wRC+ over 152 games. Still, Fenway Park’s short left field and the Green Monster might benefit his pull-heavy hitting style, potentially improving his numbers.
The risk in trading for Arenado lies in his contract, with three years and $74 million left. The Red Sox would inherit the deal of an aging player whose performance has slipped, which could affect their competitiveness.
Despite this, Boston has made significant pitching improvements, and they may need to focus on bolstering their offense if they want to compete for the division title. While it’s unclear how they feel about Arenado, he could be a good addition for them next season.
