JUST IN: Red Sox-Padres trade land Dylan Cease, Robert Suarez, in six-player blockbuster proposal

With the high-profile signing of Alex Bregman, the Boston Red Sox’s offseason grade skyrocketed from a high-C/low-B range to about an A-. Bregman not only provides the much-needed right-handed power bat that suits Fenway Park but also brings veteran leadership and championship experience to a young clubhouse. Suddenly, the Red Sox look like legitimate contenders.

However, some fans were caught off guard by reports suggesting that Craig Breslow and the Red Sox front office might not be finished making moves. Jared Carrabis of Underdog was asked about Boston’s potential interest in making a trade with the San Diego Padres for Michael King. Notably, Carrabis—who is well-connected with the team—indicated that the Red Sox may actually be more interested in acquiring Dylan Cease instead.

While there’s no certainty that Boston will push for a Cease trade, their aggressive approach this offseason—signing Bregman and Walker Buehler while also trading for Garrett Crochet—makes it difficult to rule anything out. With a farm system still rich in talent, a trade for a Cy Young-caliber pitcher remains within reach.

But what if the Red Sox aimed even higher? They could assemble a trade package enticing enough to land more than just Cease, perhaps adding reliever Robert Suarez into the deal as well.

Red Sox trade for Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez in mock blockbuster with Padres

The Red Sox could potentially acquire both Dylan Cease and veteran reliever Robert Suarez from the Padres, addressing their needs for both a frontline starter and a back-end bullpen arm.

Proposed Trade:

Boston Red Sox Receive:

  • SP Dylan Cease
  • RP Robert Suarez

San Diego Padres Receive:

  • SP Kutter Crawford
  • OF Wilyer Abreu
  • OF Miguel Bleis (No. 6 Prospect per SoxProspects.com)
  • SS Dorian Soto (No. 30 Prospect per SoxProspects.com)

For Boston, this move is straightforward. Cease, the 2022 AL Cy Young runner-up, rebounded from a rough 2023 season to dominate in San Diego in 2024, posting a 3.47 ERA and throwing a no-hitter. Adding him to a rotation featuring Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito would make the Red Sox’s pitching staff one of the deepest in MLB, rivaling the Dodgers and Mariners.

Suarez would also be a key addition, solidifying the bullpen as a potential closer after notching 36 saves with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.046 WHIP in 2024. His presence would transform a weak point from last season into a clear strength alongside Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten, Liam Hendriks, and Aroldis Chapman.

For the Padres, this deal would offer a balance of immediate contributors and long-term potential. Bleis, a top-10 prospect in a deep Red Sox farm system, has significant offensive upside but is currently blocked in Boston. Soto, a recent international signee, offers long-term infield depth as San Diego plans around Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts.

More importantly, Crawford and Abreu could provide immediate impact. Crawford, while not at Cease’s level, offers a steady rotation presence with four years of club control. Abreu, a Gold Glove-caliber defender, adds outfield depth and brings a proven bat against right-handed pitching, with possible untapped offensive upside.

The challenge in completing this deal could be Suarez’s contract, which has three years remaining but includes a player option after 2025. However, if Boston sweetens the offer, acquiring both Cease and Suarez could cement them as legitimate World Series contenders.
