The Boston Red Sox have had an exciting offseason, adding pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to bolster their starting rotation and recently signing star third baseman Alex Bregman. However, they may still pursue additional trades, potentially involving designated hitter Masataka Yoshida, to reduce payroll.
Jacob Mountz of FanSided recently suggested that the Red Sox could trade Yoshida to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for young pitcher Luis Ortiz in a one-for-one deal.
Mountz explained that Cleveland has a deep rotation with Tanner Bibee, Ben Lively, Gavin Williams, Triston McKenzie, Logan Allen, and the returning Shane Bieber, alongside Ortiz.

Adding Yoshida to their lineup would provide a quality bat. However, with Yoshida’s limited position flexibility and lack of power, his market value may not be high. Given Boston’s need to manage Yoshida’s contract and the lack of a clear role for him, trading him for a pitcher like Ortiz could be a great outcome for the Red Sox. A prospect might also be involved in the deal.
Ortiz would be a significant return for Yoshida. The 26-year-old right-hander is talented and on a cost-effective contract, making him a valuable asset. While Yoshida is a skilled hitter, his potential trade would likely be motivated by Boston’s need to shed salary. Many Red Sox fans may not expect a huge return, but landing a talented pitcher like Ortiz would be a win for the team.
