Anthony Richardson is aware of the areas he needs to improve for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts narrowly lost to the Houston Texans, 29-27, in Week 1, but quarterback Anthony Richardson showed glimpses of his potential with some impressive plays. Despite these highlights, Richardson struggled with several missed throws and admitted that he needs to improve his consistency with simpler passes—an essential step towards becoming one of the league’s top quarterbacks.

“It’s like I talked about with Tom Brady,” Richardson said, via James Boyd of The Athletic. “He’s a genius when it comes to football, and he made all the throws, not just the flashy ones. I want to add that to my game along with my physical tools. Because if I can put it all together, the world can’t stop me.”

Richardson’s comments reflect the high expectations surrounding his potential. He posted record-breaking numbers at the NFL Combine, displaying elite speed and arm strength. However, the key to his development will be mastering the fundamentals to consistently connect on short and intermediate passes. Though he missed some of those throws against the Texans, his explosive plays kept the Colts competitive in the game.

Colts look for rebound against Packers in Week 2

The Colts will hit the road in Week 2 to face the Packers, who also started the season 0-1. A key storyline for this matchup is Jordan Love’s status, as he’s questionable to play due to a knee injury sustained at the end of Green Bay’s Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. If Love can’t go, Malik Willis will start for the Packers.

Regardless, Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will be looking to find more consistency in Week 2. While the Packers’ defense forced early turnovers in their opener, the Eagles ultimately put up a lot of points. A win against Green Bay would be significant for the Colts, who have winnable games coming up against teams like the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans.

To compete with top teams like the Texans, Richardson will need to be more consistent with his passing. This week’s game against a revamped Packers defense will be an intriguing test, and a strong performance would provide optimism for his development throughout his first full season as a starting quarterback.
