A week ago, the Chargers hosted tight end Evan Engram for a visit but were unable to reach an agreement. Engram ultimately signed with the Broncos on a two-year, $23 million deal.

So far, the Chargers have remained inactive in free agency when it comes to tight ends. While they could explore a trade for a high-profile option like Philadelphia’s Dallas Goedert or Baltimore’s Mark Andrews, a new development suggests they are still considering available free agents.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Chargers will host Jets free agent for a visit. Conklin has spent the past three seasons in New York after signing in the 2022 offseason, recording 170 receptions, 1,622 yards, and seven touchdowns during that span.

At this point in his career, Conklin would provide the Chargers with a dependable receiving option. Over the past two seasons, he has posted 1,070 yards while demonstrating reliable hands, with a 0% drop rate in 2024 and just one drop total over the last two years, per PFF’s tracking.

Conklin could fill a role similar to what the Chargers initially hoped to get from Hayden Hurst in 2024—an effective pass catcher who isn’t expected to contribute much as a blocker. With Will Dissly and Tucker Fisk already on the roster, Conklin could focus on his receiving skills.

It’s also worth noting that Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander was the Jets’ Director of Player Personnel when Conklin originally signed with New York, a connection that could work in favor of a deal.

As the Chargers shift their focus to the second wave of free agency and the NFL Draft, Conklin could be a solid addition if they decide against pursuing a blockbuster trade for a top-tier tight end.
