Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson is set to enter the final year of his contract in the 2025-26 season, making him eligible to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1 of that year.

Matheson has become a key contributor for the Canadiens, not only producing steady offense from the blue line but also serving as a valuable veteran presence for the team’s younger core. Given his impact, it would make sense for Montreal to make a strong push to retain the left-shot defenseman.

Since arriving in Montreal, Matheson has tallied 25 goals, 102 assists, and 127 points. That includes a standout 2023-24 campaign in which he posted career highs with 11 goals, 51 assists, and 62 points over a full 82-game season. Clearly, he’s been a strong fit with the Canadiens, but whether that translates into a contract extension remains to be seen.

Mike Matheson's trade value has been revealed and it's huge

Matheson is currently carrying a \$4.875 million cap hit, but his recent play suggests he’s in line for a significant raise. This could complicate things for the Canadiens, who have other contracts to manage and roster needs to consider.

Ideally, the two sides can agree on a deal that works within Montreal’s salary structure, keeping Matheson as part of their plans. However, if his asking price is too high or the team envisions a different long-term direction, they may explore trade options. With a crowded blue line and Matheson’s name surfacing in trade rumors, the Canadiens could be tempted to move him if the right offer emerges.

Ultimately, Matheson’s future in Montreal remains uncertain. While there are strong reasons to extend him, the decision may come down to finances and roster flexibility.
