Breaking News: Reds confirmed to bolster their team with dominating elite big swing

The Cincinnati Reds head into a pivotal series against the New York Mets, sitting five games out of the final playoff spot.

To sneak into the postseason, they’d likely need a sweep of the Amazins and some help along the way. Terry Francona’s club is right on the edge and has the young talent to push through. The question is: who could they target in free agency to strengthen their roster for next year?

Nick Martinez K's three

Cincinnati has historically been cautious in free agency, rarely spending big. That’s part of the reason Nick Martinez is expected to depart, as the Reds have young arms already making an impact in the rotation. Letting him walk would also free up roughly \$21 million, which is currently tied to his deal.

With that money available, the Reds could look to make key additions this offseason. If they want to take the next step, free agency might be the path to securing the reinforcements they need.

Trent Grisham cashes in on an elite season

Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham has broken out in a big way this season, going from under the radar to slugging 30 home runs in The Bronx. He’ll be hitting free agency at just the right moment. While his defense in center isn’t what it used to be, his power bat makes him an ideal fit for the Reds.

Unlike his teammate Cody Bellinger—who’s expected to opt out and command a much larger contract—Grisham won’t require nearly as big of an investment. The Yankees are likely to prioritize keeping Bellinger, which could leave Grisham available. Cincinnati, in need of another outfield bat that won’t stretch the payroll, would be a natural landing spot.

Will the Reds keep Zac Littell?

The Reds made a modest deadline move by acquiring Zac Littell from the Rays, and he’s held his own in Cincinnati with a 4.78 ERA across six outings.

With Hunter Greene and Chase Burns anchoring the rotation and Nick Martinez likely on his way out, the team could use a steady veteran presence at the back. Littell fits that profile, especially if he closes the year strong.

Cincinnati was hesitant to part with top prospects at the deadline, partly because they’ve been so cautious in free agency. That makes retaining Littell on a team-friendly contract a logical move. He won’t cost much, but he could provide exactly what the Reds need.

Take a big swing with Pete Alonso

If the Reds truly want to go all-in on the National League playoff chase, Pete Alonso would be the statement signing. After failing to land a long-term, big-money deal last year, Alonso settled for a short-term contract with the Mets—and he’s once again putting up big numbers, setting himself up for another shot at free agency with the option to opt out.

That said, it’s hard to see the Reds breaking the bank for him. If they are willing to spend big, their first move should be locking up Elly De La Cruz long-term.

Still, if Alonso is open to another short-term deal, Cincinnati would be wise to make a strong push. With Great American Ballpark’s hitter-friendly dimensions, Alonso’s power bat could thrive.

The Reds already boast elite young pitching, dynamic position players, and a Hall of Fame manager. But to take the next step and make a serious run in 2026, they’ll need impact additions in free agency—and a bold swing for Alonso could be one of them.
