Outfielder has chosen free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Syracuse, per MLB.com’s transaction log. This move confirms he cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Mets last week.
Now 34, Jankowski is a veteran known more for his speed and defensive skills than his bat. He’s been something of a journeyman this season, appearing in 26 games across stints with the White Sox, Rays, and Mets. In 50 total plate appearances, he’s slashed .244/.286/.289.
Across his MLB career, Jankowski has posted a modest .236/.318/.305 batting line in 1,759 plate appearances. However, his true value lies in his glove and legs. He’s logged 3,601 innings in the outfield with 29 Defensive Runs Saved and 32 Outs Above Average, and has swiped 104 bases in 129 attempts.

Lately, he’s been a go-to option for teams dealing with injuries — a plug-in until regulars return, at which point he’s often the odd man out. With enough service time under his belt, Jankowski can decline outright assignments and test free agency, something he’s done now for the third time this season.
He’ll now wait to see what comes next. With the trade deadline nearing, roster movement could create another chance for the veteran to contribute.
