The Baltimore Orioles entered the 2025 MLB season with high expectations, aiming to be one of the league’s top contenders. However, after a disappointing 15-28 start, the team dismissed manager Brandon Hyde, appointing Tony Mansolino as the interim manager. Despite that, reports suggest the Orioles may have a different candidate in mind for the full-time role this offseason.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, if the Orioles conduct an extensive managerial search this winter, Chicago Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty is expected to be the frontrunner for the position.
During his MLB career, Flaherty hit .215 with a .284 on-base percentage and .355 slugging percentage, totaling 35 home runs across 1,270 at-bats—most of which came with the Orioles. Now 38, Flaherty was selected by Baltimore in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft and made the Opening Day roster in 2012. He played six seasons with the Orioles as a versatile utility man.

After leaving Baltimore in 2017, Flaherty had short stints with the Braves (2018) and Guardians (2019), retiring after the 2019 season. He immediately transitioned into a front office role with the San Diego Padres as an advanced scout.
Flaherty gained his first managerial experience in June 2022 when he stepped in for Padres manager Bob Melvin, who was sidelined due to COVID-19. He served as San Diego’s bench coach before moving to the same role with the Chicago Cubs in 2024.
Flaherty also has personal connections to the Orioles. He’s married to the sister of Orioles legend Nick Markakis and, according to Nightengale, was previously a finalist for the Padres’ managerial opening two years ago.
