The Mets are said to be eyeing a former All-Star starting pitcher who has transitioned to a reliever role to strengthen their bullpen.

The New York Mets came tantalizingly close to reaching the World Series last season, falling to the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers in six games during the NLCS. This underscores how close the Mets are to becoming MLB’s top team, with just a few adjustments needed to strengthen their roster and improve their postseason resilience. In line with that goal, they’ve already begun targeting reinforcements for their bullpen, including a former All-Star.

Mike Mayer of Metsmerized reports that the Mets “have shown interest” in free-agent reliever Mike Soroka, a former All-Star who spent the 2024 season with the struggling Chicago White Sox. Soroka pitched in 25 games, starting nine, but was transitioned to the bullpen in May.

Though Soroka’s career has been plagued by injuries, his ability to finish the season healthy is a positive sign. The 27-year-old thrived in his new role, posting an impressive 2.75 ERA over 36 innings with 60 strikeouts, becoming a key reliever for the White Sox.

If Soroka can sustain that level of performance in relief, he could be a valuable asset for the Mets. While he may no longer be the pitcher he was during his 2019 All-Star season with the Braves, his recent resurgence has earned him the attention of a team eager to contend for a championship.

Mets seek to improve bullpen with potential Michael Soroka addition

The Mets finished 17th in bullpen ERA last season, highlighting the need to strengthen their relief corps as a key focus this offseason, alongside their major pursuit of free agent Juan Soto. With Adam Ottavino, Drew Smith, and Phil Maton all hitting free agency, addressing the bullpen has become an urgent priority—underscoring their interest in Michael Soroka.

However, the team also faces significant challenges with their starting rotation, as key pitchers Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Jose Quintana are now free agents. These three combined for 94 starts last season, making it crucial for the Mets to find replacements. On the bright side, their substantial financial resources provide them with the flexibility to address roster needs, setting the stage for an intriguing offseason in Queens.
