If the SF Giants decide to trade just one of these players, the decision appears obvious.
Reports suggest that the SF Giants are considering trading two of their veteran players, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski. Which one is more likely to be dealt this offseason?
Both of these left-handed hitters have become fan favorites over the years, with each winning the Willie Mac Award and creating memorable moments in San Francisco. Parting with either player would be difficult, but the Giants may need to make such decisions to strengthen the team for the future.

Both players bring valuable qualities to the table. Yastrzemski is a strong defender and has the ability to heat up offensively, as shown by his 18 home runs last season. He is also an excellent baserunner and consistently executes the small details well. Wade, on the other hand, is a very patient hitter with a strong ability to draw walks. He provides solid defense at first base and is known for delivering clutch hits in key moments.
However, both have their flaws. Both have dealt with injuries recently and are not known for their speed. Yastrzemski can go through cold stretches at the plate and struggles with consistency, while Wade’s power numbers have declined, hitting only 8 home runs in 2024. These weaknesses suggest that the Giants may look to upgrade at right field, first base, or both positions this offseason.
When it comes to trade possibilities, Wade seems more likely to be dealt. First base is a bigger concern for the Giants, as Wade doesn’t fit the typical power-hitting profile for the position. He also missed significant time in 2024, appearing in only 117 games. Trading Wade and possibly moving Wilmer Flores could open up a fresh start at first base, where the Giants could pursue a short-term deal with a veteran like Paul Goldschmidt, while giving top prospect Bryce Eldridge a chance to take over if he excels in the majors.
Upgrading over Yastrzemski is a bit more complicated. While signing a big name like Juan Soto would clearly be an improvement, that doesn’t seem likely at the moment. Other potential free-agent options include Anthony Santander and Teoscar Hernandez, but attracting major hitters to Oracle Park has historically been challenging.
Yastrzemski could still be a solid right fielder for the Giants in 2025, and his presence could allow for experimentation with younger players like Luis Matos or Marco Luciano if he gets injured or if the team is out of playoff contention.
While it’s not certain that either player will be traded this offseason, it seems more likely that Wade would be moved.
