According to Fox Sports reporter Greg Auman, the Detroit Lions are adding former Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge defender/outside linebacker to their practice squad.
He, an undrafted player in 2020, spent four seasons with the Buccaneers, appearing in 40 games. Primarily used on special teams, he logged 768 special teams snaps and just 184 on defense. Despite his limited defensive role, He recorded 13 pressures and 2.5 sacks. His 2022 season was cut short due to a Lisfranc injury suffered during the preseason.
In 2024, He joined the Carolina Panthers but sustained an ankle injury in the final preseason game, where he managed two tackles and a sack. He was later released with an injury settlement.
At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, His size is comparable to Derrick Barnes (6-foot, 240 pounds). With Barnes currently on injured reserve, He could potentially fill Detroit’s SAM linebacker position. Although Gill has primarily played on the defensive line as an EDGE defender, his athletic traits may allow him to take on a more versatile role. However, his immediate impact is likely to come on special teams, where he has considerable experience.

The Lions have not yet officially announced the signing, as their practice squad is currently full. However, with an open spot on the 53-man roster, it’s expected that someone from the practice squad will be promoted to make room for Gill.
**Update:** The Lions have confirmed Gill’s signing and also announced the addition of edge defender Al-Quadin Muhammad to the practice squad. To accommodate these moves, Detroit released safety Erick Hallett and kicker Matthew McCrane from the practice squad.
Muhammad, a 2017 sixth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints, has made stops with the Colts, Bears, and Cowboys during his six-year NFL career, appearing in 84 games and starting 34. He has recorded 12 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 157 tackles. Although both Gill and Muhammad are listed as linebackers, Muhammad is more experienced on defense, while Gill has the edge in special teams experience.
**Summary:**

– EDGE Cam Gill
– **Lions released from practice squad:**
