The New York Rangers and their captain, Jacob Trouba, were the subject of offseason trade rumors, with reports of potential talks involving the Detroit Red Wings, initially reported by the New York Post. However, general manager Chris Drury emphasized that Trouba remains a key part of the team’s plans for the upcoming season.

During a media session on September 17, as reported by USA Today’s Vince Mercogliano, Drury addressed the trade rumors. While he didn’t confirm or deny any specific discussions, he stressed that he maintained open communication with Trouba over the summer. “We’ve had many conversations about various things throughout the offseason,” Drury explained. “He knows where I stand, and I know where he stands as both a player and a leader.”

Trouba’s $8 million salary cap hit contributed to the trade speculation, as clearing that space would have given Drury more flexibility to strengthen the roster. However, the 30-year-old defenseman, who has a 15-team no-trade clause, expressed his desire to remain in New York.

In the end, the Rangers chose to keep their captain, or perhaps couldn’t find the right trade partner. Drury seems content with this outcome, stating, “I think he’s done an excellent job as captain. Being a captain in New York, especially for the Rangers, comes with a lot of challenges. I’m excited to have him back for training camp, and he’s had a great offseason.”
