Breaking: Giants to land $7.75 million Padres ace as Justin Verlander replacement

After a disappointing season, it’s evident the San Francisco Giants need to make adjustments. They’ve already taken some steps — signing Willy Adames before the season and acquiring Rafael Devers in June — but it still wasn’t enough, as they finished at an even 81-81.

The Giants have concentrated on improving their lineup, but now the focus must shift to pitching. According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, they could do just that, as he predicts San Diego Padres ace and former Cy Young contender Michael King as an ideal fit in San Francisco.

Michael King Sends Message to Yankees on Returning to New York

“The Giants somehow only got a 4.13 ERA out of their starters anyway, but the potential for a powerhouse rotation will be there if they can line up someone with even more upside than Verlander behind Webb and Ray,” Rymer wrote.

“King is that kind of guy in a vacuum, and his profile is perfect for Oracle Park. He can and does miss bats, but his real strength is stifling hard contact. Combine that with one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball, and you have a perfect match.”

Michael King strikes out three

Despite missing much of this past season due to injury, King still posted a 3.44 ERA with a 5-3 record, 76 strikeouts, and a 1.22 WHIP across 15 games. In 2024 — his breakout year — he went 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA, 201 strikeouts, and a 1.19 WHIP.

King would be an excellent replacement for Justin Verlander, who’s entering free agency this offseason. While Verlander finished strong, he struggled for much of the year. It might be time for the Giants to move on and hand the reins to King, who should be fully healthy and ready to lead their rotation in 2026.
