The Cincinnati Reds exceeded expectations this season, clinching a postseason spot on the final day. However, their playoff run was short-lived as they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the wild-card round.

Now that the offseason has begun, trade rumors are already swirling around the team—particularly involving their ace, Hunter Greene. While Greene’s name has generated buzz as a potential trade candidate, moving him doesn’t appear to make much sense.

That said, the Reds might at least listen to offers if another team is willing to pay a hefty price. Jackson Roberts of Sports Illustrated recently floated the idea that the New York Mets could be a possible landing spot for Greene if talks progress.

“New York has a developing young pitching core with Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat,” Roberts wrote. “But all three will be rookies next season, and only McLean seems assured of a spot on the Opening Day roster. Beyond that, their rotation is full of uncertainty.

“It’s difficult to pinpoint what the Mets could send Cincinnati in return, since most of their position players are either untouchable or not yet reliable enough to build around. Still, it would be hard for any team to pass up the chance to acquire top shortstop prospect Jett Williams.”

In reality, though, the idea doesn’t hold much weight. The Reds are aiming to compete, not rebuild, and Greene—who remains under team control for several more years—is central to that effort. If the Mets aren’t willing to part with major assets, they’d be better off targeting another pitcher. Greene’s value is simply too high for Cincinnati to consider moving him lightly.
