Rumors surrounding the New York Yankees as the MLB trade deadline approaches have linked the team to various market targets, particularly for bolstering the bullpen and corner infield positions. Despite the recent injury to Anthony Rizzo, the Yankees were already in the market for a corner infielder. With DJ LeMahieu’s versatility to cover first base, New York has the option to target a third baseman. However, their primary focus seems to be on acquiring a powerful first baseman.
Additionally, the Yankees are eyeing relief pitchers with high strikeout potential. Although their bullpen has been one of the most effective in MLB this season, recent declines have made it imperative to find a reliable reliever. One prominent candidate is Miami Marlins closer Tanner Scott, who is on an expiring contract and would add a strong left-handed option for manager Aaron Boone. Scott is not the only Marlins player of interest to the Yankees, though.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are also exploring a trade for Marlins’ All-Star outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., with plans to use him in the infield. The Seattle Mariners are also reportedly interested in Chisholm. Following the Marlins’ trade of All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres earlier this season, it is anticipated that Chisholm will also be traded. While his current season stats (.255/.324/.419, .743 OPS, 12 home runs, 42 RBI, 18 steals) are not his career best, his versatility and skill set make him a valuable asset.
Chisholm has been inconsistent at the plate this season, with varying OPS figures across different months. In April, he posted a .720 OPS with a .254/.330/.389 slash line, improved to an .820 OPS in May, but his performance dipped after June 1, combining for a .690 OPS and a .252/.316/.374 triple-slash line.
Despite these fluctuations, Chisholm’s ability to play multiple positions adds to his appeal. Although he has primarily played center field this year, he has past experience at shortstop (2021) and second base (2022). He is under contract through 2026, with a current salary of $2.63 million.
