Elijah Mitchell, a free-agent running back for the 49ers, may struggle to find suitors due to his injury history.
As of now, Christian McCaffrey is the only running back under contract with San Francisco for 2025, with all others set to hit free agency in March—including Mitchell, who missed the entire 2024 season after undergoing hamstring surgery.
The 49ers undoubtedly could have used him last year, but now they must plan for a future without him unless they choose to bring him back.
Given Mitchell’s durability concerns, his market value will likely be low, making it difficult for him to land a significant contract elsewhere. However, the 49ers might be inclined to re-sign him at a bargain price, as they are familiar with his abilities and more willing to overlook his injury history.

If Jordan Mason, a restricted free agent, signs with another team, the chances of Mitchell returning increase even further. With limited options, he may have little choice but to re-sign with San Francisco on a minimum or slightly above-minimum deal.
A return could also benefit Mitchell, as it gives him a chance to rebuild his value. With McCaffrey’s injury risk always a factor, Mitchell could find himself in a prime position to step in, much like Jordan Mason did in 2024. Ultimately, a short-term deal with the 49ers appears to be the most likely outcome.
