SHOCKING NEWS: Joey Bosa nearly decade-long stint with the Chargers comes to an end

Joey Bosa’s tenure with the Chargers could be nearing its end. According to Jason La Canfora of The Washington Post, the team is expected to move on from the star pass rusher, while multiple sources told ESPN’s Dan Graziano that the Chargers are likely to release him.

Although the front office would prefer to keep Bosa or receive compensation in a trade, his massive $36.47 million cap hit for 2025 makes him a prime candidate for a cut. Releasing or trading him would free up $25.36 million in cap space, a significant savings despite the Chargers already having the NFL’s sixth-most effective cap space.

Bosa is set to earn $25.36 million next season, none of which is guaranteed. However, with a $12.36 million roster bonus due in March, the team is expected to make a decision on his future before that deadline.

When healthy, Bosa remains a productive force, but injuries have plagued his career. While he managed to play 14 games in 2024—recording five sacks and 13 quarterback hits—he has rarely completed a full season, with only two fully healthy years on his resume. Any team considering signing him would need to factor in the likelihood of missed time.

While restructuring his contract could be an option, Bosa already reworked his deal in 2024 to help the Chargers save over $10 million on his original $32 million cap hit. Even with further adjustments, the team would still be left with a significant financial commitment.

On the other hand, the Chargers might be forced to keep Bosa for at least another year. With Khalil Mack set to hit free agency—and the team unable to use the franchise tag on him—retaining Bosa could provide some stability on the edge if Mack departs.
