Free-agent outfielder Juan Soto is the centerpiece of this MLB offseason, with his signing expected to trigger a series of trades and free-agent deals. As Soto’s decision nears, the New York Yankees are emerging as serious contenders to acquire the All-Star outfielder.

The Yankees remain determined to land Soto, even if it means further inflating one of MLB’s highest payrolls for 2025. However, they’re also preparing for the possibility that Soto might not stay with the team beyond next season, should he opt for a rival like the Boston Red Sox or New York Mets.

In response to this uncertainty, New York has started exploring backup options in the outfield. Among those options is Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, whose trade market is reportedly heating up. According to Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, the Yankees, along with the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners, have inquired about the All-Star hitter.

Bellinger, coming off a season where he posted a .266 batting average, .751 OPS, 78 RBIs, 18 home runs, and 23 doubles, is under contract for $27.5 million in 2025, with a $25 million player option for 2026. While trade discussions are not yet imminent, it’s expected they’ll intensify after Soto is signed, with the MLB Winter Meetings next week serving as a potential flashpoint for negotiations.

However, the Cubs are reportedly unwilling to absorb any of Bellinger’s hefty contract, insisting on shedding his salary entirely. Coupled with his subpar 2024 season, this has complicated trade talks, as teams are hesitant to meet Chicago’s high asking price.

Despite these challenges, the Yankees and Astros could feel added pressure to make a move if Soto heads elsewhere or if the Astros lose Alex Bregman in free agency. This urgency might provide the Cubs with leverage to negotiate a favorable deal.
