The Boston Red Sox have already pulled off the biggest trade of the season by sending Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. That deal showed the two clubs are clearly comfortable making moves together.
According to ESPN, the top two players currently on the trade market are Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran—both Red Sox. While there’s no certainty either will be dealt, the Giants could be a logical trade partner once again, especially in a potential deal for Duran.
Giants’ trade proposal for Jarren Duran
Red Sox receive:
-
Carson Whisenhunt (Giants’ No. 2 prospect)
-
Rayner Arias (Giants’ No. 7 prospect)
-
Carson Ragsdale (Giants’ No. 21 prospect)
Giants receive:
-
Jarren Duran
The Giants’ recent acquisition of Rafael Devers makes it clear they’re going all in. Competing in a loaded NL West with the star-studded Dodgers and Padres, San Francisco can’t afford to stand pat. The Devers deal was just the beginning.
At 44-35, the Giants are holding a slight edge over San Diego, while the Dodgers continue to widen their lead. Though their outfield trio of Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, and Mike Yastrzemski has held up reasonably well, it lacks the firepower needed to contend deep into October. Jarren Duran could be the spark they need.
Duran broke out last season, earning his first All-Star nod thanks to his standout defense and strong offensive production. He hit .285 with 21 home runs and led the National League in both doubles (48) and triples (14).
While his numbers have dipped slightly this year, he’s already tallied eight triples, showcasing his continued speed and impact. He brings a rare blend of power, contact, and speed that would elevate the Giants’ outfield into a true strength — especially with his existing chemistry with Devers.
While it didn’t take a massive prospect package to land Devers due to his strained ties with Boston, the Giants may need to part with more top-tier prospects to land Duran. Still, given their aggressive posture and the talent in their farm system, it’s a price they can afford to pay if it improves their title odds.
Is Jarren Duran or Alex Bregman more likely to be moved?
It’s unlikely that either Alex Bregman or Jarren Duran will be traded. ESPN estimates just a 10% chance Bregman gets moved and a 25% chance for Duran. Bregman recently signed a three-year, \$120 million contract, which includes a high annual salary and an opt-out clause after this season—making him a risky short-term rental that could deter potential suitors.

As for Duran, he’s under team control through 2029, giving the Red Sox no urgency to trade him. While his strong 2024 performance may not be sustainable, Boston would only consider dealing him if they believed his value had peaked.
Still, with the team just outside the playoff race, it makes more sense for the Red Sox to stay competitive rather than start selling off key players.
The Rafael Devers trade wasn’t a sign of a full rebuild, but rather a reaction to a strained relationship caused by the team’s decision to move him from third base. All things considered, it’s doubtful Bregman or Duran gets traded before the deadline.
