The Boston Red Sox could be gearing up for significant roster upgrades this offseason.

Reports suggest the team has extended a contract offer to superstar outfielder Juan Soto and has shown interest in top-tier free agent pitchers such as Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, and Max Fried.

Additionally, the Red Sox might explore blockbuster trades. Thomas Gauvain of FanSided proposed a potential five-player deal with the St. Louis Cardinals that would bring Nolan Arenado, Ryan Helsley, pitching prospect Gordon Graceffo, and $15 million to Boston. In return, the Cardinals would receive Red Sox prospects Yoeilin Cespedes and Richard Fitts.

“The Cardinals get a high-upside prospect in Cespedes and a more reliable pitcher in Fitts,” Gauvain explained. “Boston, on the other hand, secures a defensive standout at third base, a dependable reliever, and a pitching prospect with rotational potential, along with cash to balance the salary gap.”

Speculation surrounding Arenado’s trade value has intensified as the Cardinals eye a roster overhaul following a disappointing 2024 season. Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, eight-time All-Star, and five-time Silver Slugger, has a full no-trade clause in his $260 million deal signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2019 but might waive it for a contender like Boston.

Acquiring Arenado could shift star slugger Rafael Devers to first base, easing his defensive responsibilities and strengthening the team’s overall defense.

The Red Sox are also likely intrigued by Helsley, the reigning National League Reliever of the Year, particularly with Kenley Jansen testing free agency. Helsley led MLB with 49 saves in 2024, earning his second All-Star selection.

This trade scenario would allow Boston to hold onto its top prospects, including Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and Kyle Teel, who are likely untouchable in trade talks. Meanwhile, Graceffo, a 24-year-old right-hander who has slipped in the Cardinals’ prospect rankings, could contribute to Boston’s bullpen or rotation as early as 2025.

Coming off a .500 season, the Red Sox face several issues to address, and a deal like this could help resolve multiple challenges simultaneously.
