Much of the Red Sox discussion this offseason has centered on potential additions to help revitalize the team.

However, what about the team’s internal free agents?

Several players from Boston’s 2024 roster have entered free agency, drawing significant interest. Among them, Nick Pivetta stands out, positioning himself for a long-term deal after declining the team’s qualifying offer. Yet, in a column from The Athletic published Friday, Jim Bowden spotlighted another Red Sox player likely to depart and potentially join a contender.

“I’d love to suggest names like Teoscar Hernández or Santander, but I just don’t see that happening,” Bowden wrote about the Cleveland Guardians. “If I had to guess, how about Tyler O’Neill?”

O’Neill had an unusual 2024 season, leading Boston with 31 home runs despite playing in only 113 games due to injuries. However, he drove in just 61 runs and is no longer the elite defender who once made him a perennial Gold Glove candidate with St. Louis.

Still, the Guardians might see O’Neill as a low-risk, high-reward option to add some much-needed power to their lineup.
