After months of limited activity in terms of major transactions—highlighted by only a minor trade and a few waiver claims to bolster the edges of the 40-man roster—the Mariners have finally made a move impacting their everyday MLB lineup.

The team announced on Monday afternoon the signing of veteran free-agent infielder to a one-year major league deal. According to reports, the contract is worth $3.5 million, with an additional $1 million available through performance incentives.

“Donovan has been one of the most underrated hitters in baseball over the past six years,” said Jerry Dipoto, the Mariners’ president of baseball operations, in a statement. “His veteran leadership, consistent production, and versatility in the field add significant value to our roster.”

Solano, who turned 37 in December, played 96 games with the San Diego Padres last season. He appeared in 38 games at third base, 26 at first base, and one at second base. A right-handed hitter, he delivered a .286/.343/.417 slash line across 309 plate appearances, tallying 13 doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBIs, 31 runs, 22 walks, and 65 strikeouts.

With the Mariners, Solano could platoon at first base alongside Luke Raley and see occasional action at third base. He’s regarded as an average defender at both positions. Last season, Solano excelled against left-handed pitching, recording a .302/.373/.443 slash line with three doubles, four home runs, 12 RBIs, 12 walks, and 20 strikeouts.

Over his 11-year MLB career, Solano has amassed 3,006 plate appearances with a career .279/.335/.381 slash line.

To clear space on the 40-man roster for Solano, the Mariners designated left-handed pitcher Austin Kitchen for assignment. Kitchen had been claimed off waivers from the Mets on September 9 after the conclusion of the Triple-A season.
