The Boston Red Sox are continuing to look for relievers and on January 17th, the team made another move to strengthen their bullpen by signing left-hander to a minor league contract, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Newcomb, 31, was a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2014 and hails from Brockton, MA.
As part of the deal, Newcomb has been invited to spring training with the major league team. Cotillo also mentioned other non-roster invitees, including Austin Adams, Robert Stock, Yovanny Cruz, and Noah Davis.
Newcomb made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 and has appeared in the majors every season since, totaling 175 appearances with a career 4.51 ERA across three teams.

The Braves acquired Newcomb in the 2015 trade that sent Andrelton Simmons to the Angels. The left-hander spent five and a half seasons in Atlanta, enjoying success as a starter from 2015 to 2019 before being shifted to the bullpen.

Most recently, Newcomb played for the A’s. His 2024 season was a struggle, posting a 6.30 ERA with an even strikeout-to-walk ratio, eight walks, and two home runs allowed in 10 innings. In 2023, he recorded a 3.00 ERA, striking out 17 and walking nine over 15 innings in the majors.
Newcomb’s best major league season came in 2018, when he posted a 3.90 ERA with 160 strikeouts and 81 walks in 164 innings. That year, he made 30 starts and one relief appearance, his longest season in the majors. Since 2019, he hasn’t pitched more than 32.1 innings in a season.
