SAN FRANCISCO — Blake Sabol quickly found a new team, but he wasn’t the only player traded from the Giants on Wednesday.

After being designated for assignment to make room for Justin Verlander, Sabol was traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for international bonus pool money. In another move, the Giants sent right-handed prospect William Kempner to the Miami Marlins for bonus pool money as well.

Trades involving bonus pool money have been rare for the Giants recently, but it was a necessary step on Wednesday. The 2025 international signing period began that morning, and the Giants have a talented group of prospects, led by Dominican shortstop Josuar De Jesus Gonzalez, considered the top position player available.

Due to previous signings of Matt Chapman and Blake Snell—both of whom were offered qualifying offers before joining the Giants—the Giants entered the signing period with less bonus pool money compared to other teams. They also faced a similar penalty with the trade for Willy Adames, but teams can replenish their international pool through trades. Although the exact amounts in these trades weren’t disclosed, teams can acquire bonus pool money in $250,000 increments.

Sabol, who was DFA’d over the weekend, will now get a fresh start with the Red Sox. Kempner, 23, was a third-round pick in 2022 and posted a 3.89 ERA while mainly working as a reliever in the lower minors. After missing all of 2024 due to injuries, he returned to pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Additionally, the Giants announced that right-hander Austin Warren was claimed by the New York Mets.
