The Toronto Blue Jays signed All-Star right-hander to a three-year, $33 million contract on Friday.

The team announced the signing of Hoffman, a former first-round draft pick (ninth overall) by Toronto in 2014. Hoffman was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 2015 as part of the deal that brought Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays.

Hoffman, who turned 32 earlier this week, will strengthen Toronto’s bullpen and is expected to take on the role of closer. The team had previously parted ways with two-time All-Star Jordan Romano in November.

“We’re thrilled to add Jeff to our bullpen,” said Toronto general manager Ross Atkins. “His elite arsenal, ability to throw strikes, and knack for missing bats make him an outstanding addition. Jeff will have an opportunity to close games for us this season, and his experience, competitiveness, and track record will complement our group perfectly.”

Hoffman had an impressive 2023 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, finishing 3-3 with a 2.17 ERA and 10 saves across 68 relief appearances. He struck out 89 batters while allowing just 48 hits and 16 walks over 66 1/3 innings, earning his first All-Star selection.

In 2022, Hoffman posted a 5-2 record with a 2.41 ERA in 54 appearances for the Phillies, allowing only 29 hits in 52 1/3 innings.

Across nine MLB seasons, Hoffman holds a career record of 23-26 with a 4.82 ERA in 256 appearances (including 50 starts). He has played for the Colorado Rockies (2016–2020), Cincinnati Reds (2021–2022), and Philadelphia Phillies.

In a corresponding move, Toronto designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment. The 27-year-old has a career 3-4 record with a 7.48 ERA in 60 relief appearances across five teams, including two games with the Blue Jays last season.
