The Flamingos defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties in their third-place encounter in Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.

It was Nigeria’s best finish in the history of the competition.

The Flamingos prevailed in the shootout winning 3-2.

This is the second African side to achieve this feat.

Gusau hails Flamingos despite defeat to Colombia

Ibrahim Gusau, the president of the Nigerian Football Federation, has praised the Flamingos despite their Wednesday loss to Colombia.

After losing to the South Americans in a 6-5 penalty shootout, the nation’s U-17 women’s team was unable to advance to the World Cup final, which is currently taking place in India.

After 90 minutes of play, the semifinal game was scoreless.

The Flamingos put on a spirited performance in the match and were just one kick away from securing a spot in the championship game.

Gusau, who was present in Goa to support the girls, posted on social media to congratulate the team.

“Amazing performance by the girls and I’m very proud of them despite the outcome of the match. Their development and welfare remains a priority to us. Well done girls #SoarFlamingos,” Gusau wrote on his Twitter handle.

The third-place game will now take place on Friday, with the Flamingos playing Germany.
