The New York Rangers are presently missing their star forward Artemi Panarin, who is day-to-day as the preseason comes to a close. Head Coach Peter Laviolette has been trying out new line combinations in Panarin’s absence, including some that fans have eagerly anticipated for quite some time.

Lafreniere has been practicing on the Rangers’ first power-play unit
The Blueshirts boast an elite power-play unit, primarily featuring their top stars, including Panarin. However, with his absence, Alexis Lafreniere has taken his place during practice, a move that has been anticipated for some time.

Integrating Lafreniere into the first power-play unit while moving a more established star to a lesser role could create better balance within the Rangers’ special teams. Lafreniere has certainly earned this opportunity. Although it’s unfortunate that it arises due to an injury, if he makes a strong impression on Laviolette, this change could become permanent even after Panarin returns.
Othmann is getting looks on the Rangers’ elite second-line
Brennan Othmann is a highly anticipated prospect eager to make his NHL debut. His progress has been hindered by not having a top-six position on the roster. However, with Panarin sidelined, coach Laviolette is giving Othmann an opportunity to prove himself alongside New York’s top forward line.

On Thursday morning, Othmann practiced with Vincent Trocheck and Lafreniere, and it was later confirmed by Vince Mercogliano that this promising trio will play together in the Rangers’ preseason finale on Friday night. This revamped second line has the potential to win over fans, although it will likely be short-lived once Panarin returns. Nevertheless, it promises to be an exciting moment while it lasts.
