On Tuesday, TSN’s Darren Dreger broke the news that forward has received a professional tryout offer to join the New York Rangers’ training camp. He, who played last season with the Edmonton Oilers organization, split time between the NHL and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After being invited to Edmonton’s camp on a PTO, he earned a one-year deal.

Erne appeared in 24 NHL games for the Oilers, tallying one goal and one assist, with his goal scored on December 21 against the New Jersey Devils. In 36 AHL games with Bakersfield, he registered six goals and six assists, and also participated in two Calder Cup Playoff games.

Erne, originally drafted 33rd overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, has played for three NHL teams. He spent most of his time in Tampa Bay splitting games between the Lightning and their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. After being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in August 2019, Erne became a regular NHL player, spending four seasons with the team before going unsigned after 2022-23.

In 379 NHL games, the 29-year-old has accumulated 43 goals and 50 assists. His playoff experience is limited, with only three Stanley Cup Playoff appearances in the 2019 postseason when Tampa Bay was swept by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round.

Heading into Rangers training camp, it remains to be seen how Erne might fit in a roster that already boasts significant depth on the wings with players like Will Cuylle, Jimmy Vesey, and Matt Rempe. Additionally, the Rangers have limited cap space, with only about $700,000 available and 46 of a possible 50 contracts signed, according to CapWages.
