The biggest storyline of this MLB offseason centers on what the Detroit Tigers will do with ace pitcher Tarik Skubal.
Skubal is set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, and according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Tigers and Skubal remain “about $250 million apart” in their contract talks. If Detroit fails to work out a deal with the 2024 American League Cy Young winner, the team risks losing him for nothing next year.

Keeping Skubal in Detroit for the long haul should be the Tigers’ top priority, though numerous teams are expected to explore trade possibilities for the premier left-handed pitcher in the game.
The New York Mets Make ‘The Most Sense’ for Skubal
The New York Mets made headlines last offseason by signing outfielder Juan Soto to the richest contract in professional sports history, yet the team still missed the playoffs. According to Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, the Mets could look to make another franchise-defining move.

“The team that makes the most sense for a Tarik Skubal trade this offseason is the New York Mets,” Kelly wrote. “Steve Cohen has the financial power to meet the price set by Skubal and agent Scott Boras next offseason, and the Mets have a pressing need for a true ace in 2026, along with young talent that could appeal to Detroit.”
Kelly noted that New York could either take a chance and wait to see if Skubal is interested in signing with them next winter or act now to acquire him via trade. The Mets have several intriguing young arms that might attract the Tigers’ attention.
“Even if Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat are considered untouchable, the Mets still have enough pieces to headline a trade package for one guaranteed season of Skubal,” Kelly concluded.
Should the Tigers Entertain Offers for Skubal?
Sometimes, the rumors don’t reflect reality. Behind the scenes, the Tigers might have a well-thought-out plan to keep Tarik Skubal in Detroit. Holding on to the former AL Cy Young winner could be their best option if they hope to stay competitive. However, financial limitations might prevent that from happening.

“As Kelly noted, Detroit owner Chris Ilitch should follow the example of his late father, Mike, and spend whatever it takes to keep one of baseball’s best pitchers in Motown. If he’s unwilling to do that, then now might be the right time to trade him.”
Ultimately, whether the Tigers move Skubal will likely hinge on what a team like the Mets can offer. A potential deal would need to include multiple established major leaguers and several top prospects. Kelly, along with many others, believes the Mets are in the strongest position to make a franchise-changing move — even if it’s just for a single season.
