The offseason is still in its early stages, but one of the biggest storylines to watch is the future of L.A. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

While there was some speculation about whether Stafford would continue playing in 2025, it appears he intends to keep going. However, the bigger question is whether he will remain with the Rams.

NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah recently sparked discussion by suggesting a bold scenario in which Stafford lands with the New York Giants.

“I’d be so fascinated to see what trade compensation would look like if the Giants traded for Stafford. If they could hold onto the 3rd pick, they could have some really fun options,” Jeremiah posted on social media.

Could Resting Matthew Stafford Come Back to Bite the Rams?

What started as an interesting thought gained traction when NFL expert Gregg Rosenthal weighed in, reposting Jeremiah’s comment and adding that it is “way more likely than not” that Stafford will be leaving Los Angeles soon.

The Rams could be in line for a veteran bridge quarterback this offseason

If Matthew Stafford is indeed traded this offseason, head coach Sean McVay will find himself in a difficult position. The Rams are far from having a draft pick high enough to select a top quarterback prospect, and this year’s rookie class isn’t shaping up to be as strong as 2024’s.

So, what options do the Rams have if Stafford is moved?

Potential free-agent quarterbacks include Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Jameis Winston. There’s also a chance Kirk Cousins enters the mix, depending on how his situation with Atlanta unfolds.

But are any of these quarterbacks on Stafford’s level? The simple answer is no.

Fields, however, could be an intriguing option. He’s still young, giving the Rams a chance to further develop him, and his mobility would add an exciting dynamic to the offense. Pairing Fields with a second-round rookie might make sense, especially with McVay’s ability to design a run-heavy scheme that plays to Fields’ strengths.

Of course, this is all speculation for now. But the fact that Gregg Rosenthal suggests Stafford is more likely to leave L.A. than stay? That’s certainly worth paying attention to.
