Since third baseman Nolan Arenado declined a trade to the Houston Astros in mid-December, rumors and reports about the 10-time Gold Glove winner have slowed down.
That hasn’t stopped fans and analysts from speculating on potential trade scenarios. However, the number of teams potentially interested in Arenado appears to be shrinking. The Astros, for instance, are likely out of the mix after signing first baseman Christian Walker and trading for Isaac Paredes. Similarly, the Los Angeles Dodgers have committed to Max Muncy as their Opening Day third baseman, and the New York Yankees seem satisfied with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Oswaldo Cabrera handling their infield duties. As a result, Arenado’s market has narrowed considerably.
One team still rumored to have interest in Arenado is the Boston Red Sox. A move to Boston could suit Arenado well at this stage in his career, especially given his stellar career numbers at Fenway Park (.333/.362/.704). He would join an already talented roster featuring players like Rafael Devers, Garrett Crochet, Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, and Tanner Houck.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently suggested a trade scenario where Arenado, along with an undisclosed amount of cash, would head to Boston in exchange for second baseman Vaughn Grissom and infield prospect Mikey Romero.
Grissom, 23, has a career .255/.309/.346 slash line and an OPS+ of 81 over 321 MLB at-bats. Despite his struggles defensively at both second base and shortstop, he remains under team control through 2029. Grissom initially joined Boston via a trade involving Chris Sale and the Atlanta Braves. If acquired by the Cardinals, Grissom could take over second base, Nolan Gorman might shift to third, and Brendan Donovan would assume a utility role.
Meanwhile, Mikey Romero, Boston’s 12th-ranked prospect, was drafted 24th overall in 2022. Despite some early back issues, he had a strong 2024 season, posting an .821 OPS with 16 home runs. Romero is seen as a high-IQ defender with solid reactions and the potential to be an everyday infielder, likely at second base.
If the Cardinals agree to include a comparable amount of cash to what they reportedly offered Houston ($15-20 million), this deal could deliver a solid return for St. Louis. They would gain a young, controllable major-league player in Grissom and a promising prospect in Romero, making the trade an appealing option for their future.
