As free-agent first baseman potential landing spots narrow, the New York Mets remain the most logical destination for him in 2025 and beyond. While the San Francisco Giants have been mentioned as a potential competitor for Him, could the Seattle Mariners emerge as another contender?
Seattle boasted one of MLB’s top pitching staffs in 2024, but inconsistent offense limited them to an 85-77 record. They finished 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West and missed the final AL Wild Card spot by just one game. To make a playoff push next season, the Mariners need to boost their lineup with a significant offensive addition.
Trevor Plouffe of Jomboy Media has predicted that Seattle will make a bold move to sign Alonso, proposing a three-year, $90 million deal. “Seattle’s pitching is elite,” Plouffe said. “But they’ve needed offense for years… Alonso brings instant production. At three years, it’s not a long-term commitment, and he’ll be productive during that time. Why not Seattle?”
Meanwhile, former MLB player Carlos Baerga claims the Mets have already extended a similar three-year, $90 million offer to Alonso, including multiple opt-outs. If offers from the Mets and other teams are comparable, it seems likely Alonso would prefer to remain in Queens.
However, signing with a new team remains a possibility for Alonso, especially as he continues to explore his options. For the Mariners to lure the “Polar Bear” away from New York, they may need to sweeten the deal with a contract exceeding $100 million.
