Last winter, the San Francisco Giants went head-to-head with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a race for two premier free agents, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Ultimately, they lost out as their NL West rivals secured both players and went on to win the 2024 World Series. This offseason, another free-agent competition might be heating up between the two teams over shortstop Willy Adames.
Can new president of baseball operations Buster Posey persuade the 29-year-old to choose San Francisco over Los Angeles?
Adames, one of the top talents available and the best shortstop on the market, is coming off a stellar 2024 season with the Milwaukee Brewers. Playing in 161 games, he achieved career highs in home runs (32), doubles (33), RBIs (112), and runs scored (93). His willingness to switch positions could also expand his potential suitors, making his market broader than expected.
Both the Giants and Dodgers need a consistent shortstop for 2025. So, who’s more likely to sign Adames? Among 52 MLB.com voters polled, 37% predicted he would sign with the Giants, while the Dodgers received 29% of the votes.
Wherever he lands, Adames is projected to secure a contract exceeding $100 million. However, if multiple teams compete aggressively, his contract could reach $200 million. MLB Trade Rumors estimates a six-year, $160 million deal for the star shortstop.
