The Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers might find mutual benefit in a trade, as suggested by a recent mock deal. The Phillies are seeking bullpen reinforcements and are reportedly open to trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm.

Meanwhile, the Brewers boast a standout closer, Devin Williams, who remains under club control following his offseason buyout. Milwaukee also faces the possibility of losing star third baseman Willy Adames either this fall or next winter.

Phillies could swap Alec Bohm for Devin Williams

Considering all factors, the situation appears ideal for both teams to strike a mutually beneficial deal. According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden (via Patrick McAvoy of Milwaukee Brewers on SI), a potential trade could see the Brewers send Williams and a prospect to the Phillies in exchange for Bohm:

“The Phillies need a top-tier, right-handed, high-leverage closer, and this trade makes a lot of sense for them, particularly if they can subsequently sign Alex Bregman or Willy Adames to fill Bohm’s spot at third base,” Bowden explained. “Phillies prospect Aidan Miller likely won’t be ready for major-league action at third base until 2026 or 2027.

“From the Brewers’ standpoint, this deal also works well, as Bohm could address their need at third base while replacing Adames in the lineup. This would allow Ortiz to take over at shortstop and keep Brice Turang at second base.”

Williams & Bohm would fill both teams’ respective needs

Williams, a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, showcased elite performance despite being limited to just 22 games in 2024. The 30-year-old delivered a sparkling 1.25 ERA, a 0.969 WHIP, 38 strikeouts, and 14 saves. Based on his save opportunities from 2023, he was on track for a career-best 38 saves if he had appeared in 61 games.

On the other hand, Bohm earned his first All-Star selection in 2024, thanks to an impressive season at the plate. The Nebraska native posted a strong .280/.332/.448 slash line, contributing 15 home runs and 97 RBIs.

Acquiring Williams would give the Phillies a top-tier closer to bolster their World Series aspirations. Meanwhile, the Brewers would gain a rising star with the potential to bounce back from his well-documented second-half struggles in 2024. Such a trade could position Philadelphia as major beneficiaries in a deal of this magnitude.
