As Spring Training games began on Friday, San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt was without his star player, Fernando Tatis Jr. His absence was noticeable, especially since he had been actively participating in practice leading up to Spring Training. While speculation arose about a possible trade, that idea was quickly dismissed.
Fortunately, the mystery was soon solved. According to Sammy Levitt of Padres radio, Tatis was feeling under the weather. Though no specific details were provided, it appeared to be a common cold or flu. Regardless, the Padres are being cautious with their franchise cornerstone.
With five weeks of Spring Training ahead, Tatis will have ample time to get back into form. He remains a key piece of the lineup alongside Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado, with aspirations of contending for a Silver Slugger and possibly even MVP honors.

San Diego did lose Jurickson Profar in free agency, which was a significant factor in their past success. However, Tatis’ electrifying play remains a game-changer for the Padres.
Padres’ Mike Shildt isn’t worried about Fernando Tatis Jr.
Shildt’s comments showed no sign of concern, which isn’t surprising given that Spring Training has just begun and plenty of games remain. After a challenging 2023 season, Tatis rebounded and earned a spot in the 2024 All-Star Game. The Padres also advanced past the Wild Card round before falling to the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the divisional series.

There will be plenty of opportunities for Tatis to take the field this spring. He could see some at-bats as a designated hitter, but if not, he’ll continue playing his usual roles in right field and shortstop.
His talent and potential are undeniable. During the divisional round, he was even compared to David Ortiz for his clutch postseason performances. At just 27 years old, Tatis still has plenty of time to further establish himself as a superstar.
Regardless, he’ll have the spring to regain top form, and with Shildt showing no concern, his return should feel seamless once he steps back onto the field.
