As negotiations between Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers remain at a standstill, fans are getting small updates on the situation.

The saga began when ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported that Shesterkin had rejected an $88 million, eight-year offer from the Rangers. This came just before the start of the regular season, after it was revealed that Shesterkin had given the team an October 9 deadline to finalize a deal.

However, a new report suggests the former Vezina Trophy winner might be open to negotiating during the season, but only if the deal reflects his true value. On October 12, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Shesterkin is willing to sign mid-season, provided the offer meets his expectations.

Rangers' Igor Shesterkin brushes off contract questions

“The word is, if the Rangers hit a number he likes, they can still get it done in-season,” Friedman said. “I’ve heard many times that Shesterkin sees himself as the Rangers’ best and most important player, and I don’t think anyone would disagree.”

Shesterkin’s rejection of the $88 million deal would have made him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history, surpassing Carey Price’s $84 million contract. However, Shesterkin’s goal appears to be becoming the highest-paid player on the Rangers, surpassing Artemi Panarin’s $11.6 million annual salary.

According to Friedman, Shesterkin’s camp is likely aiming for around $12.58 million per year, matching Panarin’s salary cap percentage.

In a positive sign for Rangers fans, Friedman added that the franchise has no issue with making Shesterkin the NHL’s highest-paid goalie, though it’s unclear if they’re willing to pay him more than their star forward.
