JUST IN: New York Mets To Land Favorable $60 Million Arizona Diamondbacks’ Gold Glover As Pete Alonso Replacement

The New York Mets fans have been vocal about wanting Pete Alonso to return, but despite rumors of the Juan Soto deal reaching $600 million, re-signing Alonso seemed achievable, even with his asking price nearing $200 million.

However, after the Mets signed Soto to a record-breaking $765 million deal, committing over $150 million to Alonso now seems unlikely.

Recently, FanSided’s Michael Brakebill predicted that the Mets would part ways with Alonso and instead pursue Arizona Diamondbacks’ first baseman Christian Walker. Walker is expected to sign a three-year, $60 million contract, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Brakebill explained that while the Mets need to continue spending, they should be cautious with long-term deals for certain players. With Soto’s massive contract already in place, opting for Walker’s shorter deal would be smarter, as it wouldn’t tie up as much money for too long. Even for a big spender like Steve Cohen, it’s ideal to minimize any negative impact on the team. Walker offers a higher batting average, plenty of power, and top-tier defense at first base.

Walker is a more cost-effective option than Alonso. If the Mets didn’t have other needs like filling gaps in the starting rotation, bullpen, and across the field, re-signing Alonso might make more sense. But with the need to add a top-tier starter, the Mets are likely to pivot to Walker. They could also shift Mark Vientos to first base full-time and pursue a third baseman.
