With Pete Alonso’s return to the New York Mets uncertain, a team insider has proposed a bold trade suggestion to help address the potential power gap in the lineup.

The past few months have been eventful for the Mets. As the offseason began, the front office had a long list of tasks, including filling three spots in the starting rotation. While they successfully addressed that issue, they also made headlines by signing New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto to the biggest contract in sports history.

Despite these significant moves, the Mets are facing a challenge regarding Pete Alonso. The homegrown All-Star is seeking a new contract in free agency that exceeds what team president David Stearns is willing to offer for a 30-year-old first baseman.

A few weeks ago, it appeared likely that the four-time All-Star would play elsewhere in 2025. However, to the surprise of many MLB experts, the free agent market for the slugger has been underwhelming, giving the Mets a better chance to re-sign him. Still, recent rumors suggest the two sides remain far apart on a deal.

In light of this, New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman recently presented some potential replacements, including a three-time All-Star the team nearly signed in free agency two years ago.

Carlos Correa stats (2024): .310 AVG, .388 OBP, .517 SLG, .905 OBS, 14 HR, 54 RBI, 55 R.

Should New York Mets target Carlos Correa trade to replace Pete Alonso’s bat?

In a column on Tuesday, Sherman suggested six potential targets for the New York Mets in case their talks with Pete Alonso fall through. Among these were experienced player Jurickson Profar and skilled on-base expert Seiya Suzuki. However, one name might come as a surprise to Mets fans.

Carlos Correa still option for Twins at Winter Meetings

The New York baseball insider speculated that the Mets could pursue a trade for the often-injured, three-time All-Star Carlos Correa. The Minnesota Twins are reportedly looking to reduce payroll, and the 30-year-old Correa is one of their priciest players.

Carlos Correa’s contract: Six years, $200 million.
“Even after failing Correa’s physical, the Mets were still open to a six-year deal with him. Had he accepted it, he would have the same four years remaining (through his age-33 season) as he does now, valued at $128 million,” Sherman wrote. “The plan was to position him at third base alongside his friend Lindor, with Mark Vientos potentially moving to first base.”

The Mets nearly secured Correa in a major free-agent deal two years ago, but a failed physical led them to lower their offer. Despite playing just 86 games last season, Correa earned his third All-Star selection in 2024. While he may not have the same power as Alonso, Correa would strengthen the Mets’ defense and provide an increased on-base percentage.
