The New York Mets appear fully committed to re-signing slugger Pete Alonso this offseason. Earlier, the Mets made headlines by signing superstar Juan Soto to a near $800 million deal. While they’ve added some pitchers since then, they have yet to make another blockbuster move.
Securing Alonso would undoubtedly be that next major splash. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Alonso is projected to sign a deal worth $152 million, which seems to align with market expectations.
With teams like the Houston Astros, Washington Nationals, and New York Yankees out of the running after acquiring first basemen of their own, the Mets have emerged as clear favorites to retain Alonso.
But what if another team unexpectedly swoops in? What would owner Steve Cohen and the Mets do if Alonso signs elsewhere?
In that scenario, the Mets’ contingency plan could involve trading for St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado. The plan would see Mark Vientos shift to first base, with Arenado taking over at third.

The Cardinals began exploring trade options for Arenado earlier this offseason, but complications arose due to his contract and no-trade clause. However, Arenado has reportedly approved trades to six teams, including the Mets.
If New York pursues Arenado, they would likely absorb a significant portion of his contract, minimizing the need to give up top prospects.
Most likely, though, Alonso will return to Queens on a lucrative deal, leaving the Cardinals to find another destination for Arenado. However, if a team like the Seattle Mariners lands Alonso, the Mets would likely pivot to an Arenado trade.
